Atmospheric Ocean Light Written Guide

Stormy East Coast Sea
Unison Colour soft pastels with Derwent XL Charcoal Blocks and gouache on Canson Moulin du Roy 300gsm (140lb) Rough surface watercolour paper. 22 x 20 inches (56 × 51cm).

Working Unison Colour soft pastels into both dry and wet areas of the rough paper surface helped unify both drawn and painted marks with different media combined throughout the painting process.

For me Winter cannot come soon enough. I look forward to it and embrace the muted tones in the landscape and by the sea. Shorter days mean I have to work quickly to take advantage of the fleeting light so, nothing better than to be using Unison Colour pastels to assist such outdoor mixed media and pastel paintings and studies.

Despite the useful and attractive full range of Unison Colours available to use, it is the purity of black and white pastels in the range I find so compelling to use. Black and white and grey scale studies say a great deal. The viewer, guided by my tonal expressive layering as suggestions, chooses their own interpretations to each and every painting.
