Applying an underpainting to the paper can serve as a road map for the variations of values within the scene. It can identify the relationships between the lights and the darks and will assist as subsequent layers of pastel are applied to the painting. It also adds another layer of color that will peak through and add interest and dimension to the painting. I may create a Value Map using warm hues or cool hues, including colors such as burnt sienna, raw umber or ultramarine blue.
