The Magic of Colour

Colour is such a complex subject and a whole science of it’s own. Understanding colour as an artist can really make your work stand out because of the sophistication and complexity that can be created when you understand the rules. Serious artists study colour in depth over a lifetime, but just understanding some fundamentals can take your artwork to another level.

When we talk about colour we are initially considering 3 main factors.

1. Hue – the ‘actual’ colour itself
2. Value – how light or dark that colour is
3. Saturation – how vivid or pure the hue is – also referred to as chroma.
