Pastels are different then paint. With paint, you have infinite possibilities of hues and shades. When painting with pastels, you interpret with the colours you have.

Choosing Colour

Look at your scene and determine the lights and darks. Getting the correct tones is more important than getting the exact hue. If you are having trouble seeing the lights and darks take a photo of your subject and convert it to black and white. Now, you can clearly see the tones. To check how your drawing compares, take a pic of your drawing, and convert that to black and white.
