In 18th Century France, pastels were the media of choice for portraits. This painting by Swiss pastelist Jeanne Etienne Liotard (1702-1789), is titled a “Portrait of Maria Frederike van Reede-Athlone at Seven Years of Age”. It was painted between 1755 and 1756 and is composed of pastel on vellum. It measures 21.6 x 17.6 in. It was regarded as one of the finest portraits of its age and is a wonderful example of the artist’s mastery of his medium.
