Landscape with Isopropyl Alcohol Underpainting with David Shkolny

Some years ago after studying some underpainting techniques via “The Pastel Journal”, I wanted to give this fascinating alternative to the traditional application of dry pastel a try and see how it fit with my love for process and experimentation. Working on a sanded surface offers this possibility – pushing the work to a painterliness perhaps not achievable on a non-sanded paper. My paper of choice used to be Wallis Sanded Paper, but it has unfortunately gone out of production and though I’ve tried one or two others to replace it, it was only when I found Luxarchival that I felt in that same zone that Wallis gave me.

The subject I’ve chosen for this demonstration is of a gentle path in a nature preserve near where I live in Edmonton, Alberta. The strong lighting illuminating the scene as well as the luminescent colours inspired me.
