Stage 6: Selection of colors

Rather than using the photocopy of the reference photo that I used during the sketch, I used a computer tablet for more accurate rendering of the colors of the elephant.

Because of our natural tendency to choose colors based on what we “know” rather than what we actually see, I frequently use a piece of white paper with a small hole cut into it to help identify the actual local colors within a scene.  I call this a Color Isolator.
