Dexterity and handling

Materials needed:

  • a collection of fabrics with a pattern of lines, stripes, plaid or checks. These maybe tablecloths, tea towels, shirts or sheets.
  • Smooth basic paper in loose sheets or in a sketchbook for practicing the mark making exercises. Pastel paper is not necessary at this stage.
  • A set of pastels or similar as described in the introduction for month 1.

Part 1

I shall use an old tea towel with regular narrow stripes, a colourful table cloth and a shirt which has a very regular checked pattern.

Practice these exercises to improve your dexterity and handling of your pastels as this will eventually show in your work as confident and exciting marks.
